A Word about Alternates to Liposuction from Dr. Amron:

In the past several years, there have been many procedures, both FDA approved and not FDA approved, which are being aggressively marketed as
a replacement for liposuction. Although lasers that ‘melt’ the fat or solutions
that are injected seem like enticing an alternate to surgery, it is my opinion, and the opinion of other leading liposuction experts, that these are not a replacement for well done liposuction to permanently remove the disproportionate fat tissue.

One will rarely find a surgeon that specializes in liposuction having incorporated these modalities in their practice. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. At the risk of sounding self-serving, I do not like to see people waste their money or expectations on things, not proven to give good, consistent results.

With regards to other modalities of liposuction, such as SmartLipo, Lipo Disolve MesoTherapy; I feel these are not advancements. Liposuction still needs to be done with proper tumescing of local anesthesia. The fat becomes very soft and easy to remove, then with the proper technique excellent skin tightening is achieved in my hands. It is more important how well the sculpting is done and less important what tools are used. Remember, it is the sculpting that matters most.

The Role of Thermage:

There is a small role for Thermage or other radio frequency devices and liposuction. I only use Thermage after liposuction to achieve additional skin tightening in certain areas, such as the abdomen, neck, inner thighs, and arms. Most of my patients that I have done Thermage on after liposuction get additional skin tightening. However, the procedure is fairly expensive and I generally would not recommend it to patients if they are trying to be cost effective. The neck is one area I do like Thermage, as it can help delay the need for a facelift along with liposuction, so it is well worth it. Recently, a new deep tightening tip was just released by Thermage and it should be more effective in body tightening.
