Revision liposuction
Revision liposuction is used to correct unsatisfactory results of a previous liposuction procedure. Poor results are often caused by improper evaluation or poor surgical technique.
It is part of the surgeon’s job to determine if a person is a good candidate for liposuction and where on the body liposuction can successfully be performed. Because liposuction involves body sculpting, it is essential that the surgeon be skilled at determining where to remove fat to achieve the desired body contours.
Liposuction requires skill to sculpt the body proportionately, resulting in asymmetry. An inexperienced doctor may be less skilled or less familiar with liposuction techniques. This can result in poor results that will need to be revised with additional cosmetic procedures.
Not all of the people unhappy with previous surgeries are candidates for revision liposuction. In these cases, too much fat may have been removed or further surgeries may be unwise due to the patient’s health. However, many cases of poorly done liposuction can be corrected or significantly improved by an experienced and skilled doctor. Uneven fat removal or insufficient fat removal can often be corrected.
One common reason for revision liposuction is that the treated area or areas were not blended with the surrounding area. There is an abrupt change between the two areas. A doctor may revise this result by employing a different technique that will blend the areas for a more natural looking appearance.
The revision surgery is performed several months after the initial procedure to give the body time to heal and for the results of the first surgery to fully develop.
Revising another surgeon’s work is more difficult generally than performing liposuction on an unaltered patient. It is important for patients to find a doctor that is experienced and skilled in revision liposuction in order to achieve the desired results without the need for future surgeries.
